Earlier this week, Konami delighted fans of classic RPGs with a special live stream focused entirely on the beloved Suikoden series. Given that the franchise hasn't seen a new entry since a Japan-only PSP side story over a decade ago, anticipation for what was to come was high and varied. The announcements brought a mix of excitement and concern. First, the good news: a Suikoden anime, titled "Suikoden: The Anime," is in the works! It's based on the events of Suikoden 2 and marks Konami's first venture into animation. While we didn't see much beyond a brief scenery clip, this is thrilling news for die-hard fans and could serve as an excellent introduction for newcomers, assuming it becomes widely available.
However, the second major announcement left fans with mixed feelings. A new game, "Suikoden Star Leap," was unveiled, and it's visually stunning, featuring 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds reminiscent of Octopath Traveler. Set a few years before Suikoden 1 and after Suikoden 5, it promises to maintain the series' tradition with 108 characters. The catch? It's slated for release exclusively on mobile platforms and will incorporate gacha mechanics and ongoing monetization. This move has disappointed many fans who cherished the series' history of premium console and PC releases. The impact of these monetization strategies on gameplay and character collection remains to be seen.
In the meantime, fans can look forward to the re-releases of Suikoden 1 and 2 through "Suikoden I&II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars." A new trailer for this collection was showcased during the live event, and it's set to launch tomorrow, March 6.
