How to Two-Hand Weapons in Elden Ring

To wield weapons two-handed in Elden Ring, press and hold E (PC), Triangle (PlayStation), or Y (Xbox), then initiate an attack with your preferred hand's weapon. Note that altered control schemes may require adjustments. This method also works while mounted, but remember that weapons requiring two-handing due to Strength requirements must be wielded this way before mounting your steed.

Several compelling reasons exist for employing two-handed combat:

  • Increased Damage: Two-handing boosts your Strength by 50%, significantly amplifying the damage output of Strength-scaling weapons.
  • Altered Movesets: Two-handing often modifies attack animations and even damage types, adding tactical versatility.
  • Accessibility to Heavier Weapons: This technique allows you to wield weapons normally beyond your Strength capabilities, optimizing stat allocation.
  • Ash of War Optimization: Using a shield often defaults weapon skills to the shield. Two-handing your weapon grants access to its Ash of War, enhancing combat flexibility.

Drawbacks of Two-Handed Combat

While beneficial for Strength builds, two-handing has limitations:

  • Modified Attacks: Altered attack patterns require adaptation and strategic adjustments based on the environment. Sometimes, sacrificing raw damage for situationally advantageous attacks is wise.
  • Build Dependency: This technique is less effective for Dexterity or other non-Strength-focused builds. Experimentation is key.

Generally, large, Strength-scaling weapons excel in two-handed combat. Consider Greatswords, Colossal Swords, Great Hammers, and Colossal Weapons. The Two-Handed Sword Talisman (available in Shadow of the Erdtree) significantly boosts damage when using swords two-handed. Recommended weapons include the Greatsword, Zweihander, Fire Knight's Greatsword, and the Giant-Crusher (for non-sword options).

Elden Ring is available on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
