The upcoming release of Dynasty Warriors: Origins on January 17, 2025, marks a significant milestone for the franchise, but its journey to development was far from straightforward. Omega Force, the game's developer, recently revealed the cancellation of a planned tenth mainline installment in the series, a decision driven by technological advancements and a desire to create a more modern and strategically engaging experience.
Initially conceived as a traditional stage-clearing title reminiscent of Dynasty Warriors 7, this "phantom" Dynasty Warriors 10 was ultimately scrapped. The team, witnessing the potential of next-gen consoles like the PlayStation 5, opted for a paradigm shift. This led to the creation of Dynasty Warriors: Origins, a game that retains the series' signature hack-and-slash combat within the Three Kingdoms setting, but with significant enhancements.
Producer Tomohiko Sho highlighted the transformative impact of modern hardware capabilities. The decision to cancel Dynasty Warriors 10, while difficult, paved the way for a more ambitious and innovative title. The team salvaged key elements from the abandoned project, including the free-roaming map and a more in-depth exploration of the Three Kingdoms narrative, both features incorporated into Origins.
Producer Masamichi Oba emphasized the bittersweet nature of this transition. While abandoning a significant amount of prior work was challenging, the integration of select features from the canceled project ultimately enriched Dynasty Warriors: Origins, resulting in a more refined and compelling gameplay experience. Deluxe Edition players have already experienced this enhanced gameplay, with the full release set to introduce the game's unique amnesiac protagonist and their journey through the tumultuous Three Kingdoms Era to a wider audience.
