Dominoes, also known as dominos, is a captivating board game played with rectangular tiles called "dominoes." Each tile is split into two square ends, marked with spots or left blank, creating a versatile gaming tool similar to playing cards or dice.
A standard domino set, often called a deck or pack, typically includes 28 tiles, known as bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. Extended sets like double 9 and double 12 are used for games such as Mexican train and Chicken Foot. Each country boasts its own set of beloved domino games, from muggins in England, Bergen in Scandinavian countries, Mexican train in Mexico, to Matador in Spain.
Dominoes trace their origins back to Song Dynasty China, making their way to Italy in the 18th century. The evolution from Chinese to modern dominoes remains a fascinating mystery.
The simplest form of dominoes is a two-player game using a double six set. After shuffling the 28 tiles into a stock or boneyard, each player draws seven tiles. The game starts with one player laying down their first tile, initiating the line of play where adjacent tiles must match in value. Players take turns extending this line, aiming to play all their tiles or block their opponent. The game ends when a player goes out or when no further moves are possible, with points awarded based on the remaining tiles.
In scoring variants, points are earned through specific configurations or moves. In muggins, players score by making the open ends sum to multiples of five. In bergen, points are scored when the open ends match. Mexican train awards 50 points for the double zero domino. Strategic calls like "domino" can affect gameplay and scoring.
The draw game allows players to draw additional tiles from the stock before playing. Points are calculated based on the pips in the losing player's hand and the stock, with most rules requiring two tiles to remain in the stock. This version is often simply referred to as "dominos."
