A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch! Unlike other consoles, the Switch boasts a surprisingly smaller selection of distinct Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS ports. That's why we're combining them into one list, focusing on titles available on the Switch eShop. This curated list features ten favorites: four Game Boy Advance and six Nintendo DS gems. Let's dive in!

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge, this GBA version is a solid alternative, offering a faster-paced experience. It's a fun game regardless of which version you play, even appealing to those who usually avoid shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action title marks the beginning of an excellent series, though its initial entry shows some early rough edges. These imperfections are smoothed out in later installments, but Mega Man Zero remains the perfect starting point.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

Another Mega Man entry, but justified due to its stark contrast with Mega Man Zero. This RPG boasts a unique battle system blending action and strategy. Its clever premise of a virtual world within electronic devices is fully realized. While later entries in the series see diminishing returns, this first game is a blast.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

This collection is worth buying in its entirety, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For certain moods, I prefer it even to the incredible Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes the grinding worthwhile. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, making it a top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae was a cult classic, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare changed that, launching the Half-Genie Hero into wider recognition. This title's success ensured Shantae's continued presence across console generations. Interestingly, its origins trace back to an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Technically a Game Boy Advance game (its original platform), Ace Attorney is a must-have. These adventure games combine investigations with dramatic courtroom scenes, blending goofy humor with compelling narratives. The first game is phenomenal, though later installments are also excellent.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick shares the same high writing quality but features unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of your death. This wild ride deserves recognition, especially considering Capcom's continued support.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

The World Ends With You is a top-tier Nintendo DS game, ideally experienced on its original hardware. While ports haven't perfectly replicated the original experience, the Switch version offers a suitable alternative if you lack a working DS. It's a truly exceptional game.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all the Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are worth playing, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the updated button controls replacing the original's touch controls. Play them all!

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

This franchise is challenging to adapt outside the DS/3DS ecosystem, but Atlus's efforts resulted in a playable Switch version. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, and Etrian Odyssey III, being the largest, is a rewarding experience despite its complexities.

This concludes our list. What are your favorite GBA or DS games on the Switch? Share your thoughts in the comments!
