This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game selections. However, I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, resulting in a legendary library still seeing re-releases. While these titles once challenged Nintendo, they're now enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order):
Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated gem, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Play as a charming, floppy-eared creature traversing a dream world to thwart a looming threat. Expect vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly less impressive, the collection is a must-have.
A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII awakened the Western world to JRPGs, becoming Square Enix's greatest triumph and a key driver of PlayStation's success. Yes, a remake exists, but the original FFVII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. While later entries embraced more eccentric elements, the original delivers a thrilling, GI Joe-esque adventure. Its engaging gameplay is undeniable, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.
G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter series into 3D. While the polygonal graphics show their age, their charm remains. The vibrant colors, innovative enemy capture system, and inventive bosses create a compelling shooter experience.
To avoid an all-Square Enix list, I've included only this and FFVII. Chrono Cross, while failing to match Chrono Trigger's popularity, stands on its own merits. It's a visually stunning RPG with a vast, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters and an unforgettable soundtrack.
While personally biased towards the Mega Man series, I recommend Mega Man X and Mega Man X4 to newcomers. X4 boasts superior cohesion compared to its predecessors. The Legacy Collection offers a chance to experience these titles firsthand.
Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with solid action. Created by the mind behind Ghosts ‘n Goblins, it initially appears simple but offers a challenging experience. Its resurgence is welcome.
Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Grandia, sharing creators with Lunar, is a bright and cheerful RPG with a satisfying combat system. The collection includes another worthy title.
Lara Croft's PlayStation debut is iconic. While quality varied across the five games, the original's focus on tomb raiding stands out. This collection lets you decide your favorite.
A lesser-known Japanese title, moon deconstructs the RPG genre, offering a unique adventure game experience. While not consistently fun, its unconventional approach and message are compelling.
This concludes the list. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on the Switch in the comments! Thank you for reading this series.
