Microsoft unveiled Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 during its Xbox Games Showcase in June 2025, a later-than-usual reveal for the franchise. The debut trailer, embedded below, offered few details beyond a story tease, the confirmed setting of 2035, and the protagonist: David Mason.
This limited information is part of Activision's marketing strategy for Black Ops 7, which intentionally keeps details scarce before the game's late 2025 launch. The objective? Activision aims for the launch of Black Ops 7 to have the surprise impact of a Beyonce album release.
In an interview with Variety, Activision's Chief Marketing Officer, Tyler Bahl, elaborated on the company's approach with Black Ops 7:
"Typically by now, we would have teased all the upcoming content. We're orchestrating this launch more like a surprise Beyonce album drop; nobody will anticipate it or see it coming.
"Our primary goal was to execute something truly different, to zig when others zag and present ourselves in a unique manner. One method to achieve this is by forgoing pre-release promotion and delivering the game to players in a completely unexpected fashion."
Although Activision has promised a more substantial reveal in the summer, it's possible very little will be shown, leaving fans to wait until the release date to truly understand what Black Ops 7 offers.

So, what information is available? Black Ops 7 is set in 2035, over 40 years after the events of Black Ops 6, depicting a world on the verge of chaos following the narratives of Black Ops 2 and the previous year's Black Ops 6. The co-op campaign makes its return in Black Ops 7 after being absent in the sixth installment (the campaign can still be played solo). Players can anticipate using near-future weaponry in Multiplayer across brand-new maps. Additionally, the next chapter of Round-Based Zombies is set deep within the Dark Aether.
Here is the official description:
Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, David Mason and his team must combat a manipulative adversary who uses fear as their ultimate weapon.
As reported by Variety, Black Ops 7 features This Is Us star Milo Ventimiglia portraying David Mason (the character has been recast with a new face), Kiernan Shipka as a new character named Emma Kagen (CEO of The Guild), and Michael Rooker, who returns as Mike Harper from Black Ops 2.

It is also confirmed that Activision will continue support for last-generation consoles with Black Ops 7. The game is scheduled for release on Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via "Xbox PC," Battle.net, and Steam. As expected, it will be available on launch day for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers. The announcement did not mention a release for the Nintendo Switch 2. The game is a co-development effort between Treyarch and Raven Software.
Black Ops 7 represents the first instance of consecutive releases within the Black Ops sub-series, arriving just one year after the launch of Black Ops 6. Some fans have expressed concerns that this could make Black Ops 7 feel like a stop-gap title, reminiscent of how 2023's Modern Warfare 3 was perceived by parts of the community following 2022's Modern Warfare 2. Activision, however, has asserted that Black Ops 7 "delivers the complete Call of Duty experience for our players."
The expectation is that Infinity Ward will return with a new Modern Warfare game in 2026, thereby resetting the Call of Duty development cycle once again.
