As a practical person when it comes to spending money, I typically stick to purchasing essentials and the occasional video game on sale. However, last year, I found myself drawn back to the world of LEGO sets, a hobby I cherished as a child but had long since abandoned. The catalyst for this return was the realization that LEGO sets, particularly those tied to movie or video game franchises, come with a hefty price tag. It took me a while to justify the purchase of the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, which had been on sale since October of the previous year for under $50. Eventually, I decided my desk could use a unique potted plant, and thus, the Piranha Plant became mine.
My interest in the Piranha Plant set was sparked after reading IGN's review. Being a long-time fan of the Mario franchise, this set seemed like the perfect way to showcase my affection for the series. While LEGO's botanical line offers beautiful flower sets that would enhance my desk, none capture the whimsical yet slightly menacing charm of the Piranha Plant.
Having now built the set, I'm thrilled to have it on my desk. It transports me to the Mushroom Kingdom, where I imagine tending to my little potted Piranha Plant during work hours. The building process was as enjoyable as the final product; I completed it in one afternoon, yet it was challenging enough to keep me engaged throughout. This is currently my only LEGO Nintendo set, but my positive experience has me considering adding more to my collection.
LEGO sets, especially those aimed at adults, can be quite expensive, with new releases often exceeding $200. It's easy to get carried away and spend more than intended on these delightful creations. For me, the decision to purchase the Mario LEGO set for under $50 felt justified. The hours spent building it and the daily joy it brings me are priceless. While I believe that happiness is worth more than $50, that's the limit I set for myself when indulging in such hobbies.
