For several generations, AMD has been striving to compete with Nvidia in the high-end graphics card market. However, with the launch of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, Team Red has shifted its focus away from the ultra-high-end RTX 5090, aiming instead to offer the best value for the majority of gamers. Priced at just $599, the Radeon RX 9070 XT delivers performance that rivals the $749 GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, making it one of the top GPUs available today. The inclusion of FSR 4, AMD's first foray into AI upscaling, further enhances its appeal, making it the ideal choice for 4K gaming without breaking the bank.

Purchasing Guide

----------------

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT will be available starting March 6, with a starting price of $599. Be aware that prices may vary due to third-party cards that may be priced higher. It's advisable to aim for a model priced under $699 for the best value.

Specs and Features

------------------

Built on the RDNA 4 architecture, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT introduces significant enhancements, particularly in its RT and AI Accelerators. The AI Accelerators are crucial for the new FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4), marking AMD's first use of AI upscaling. While FSR 4 doesn't necessarily boost frame rates over FSR 3.1, it significantly improves image quality. For those prioritizing performance, the Adrenalin software allows you to disable FSR 4.

AMD has also optimized its shader cores, achieving better performance per core. Despite having fewer Compute Units (64) than the previous Radeon RX 7900 XT (84), the RX 9070 XT offers a notable generational leap at a more affordable price. Each Compute Unit contains 64 Streaming Multiprocessors, totaling 4,096, along with 64 ray accelerators and 128 AI accelerators.

However, the RX 9070 XT has less memory than its predecessor, with 16GB of GDDR6 on a 256-bit bus, compared to 20GB on a 320-bit bus. While this is a reduction in both capacity and bandwidth, it's still sufficient for most 4K gaming needs. The card's power consumption is slightly higher at 304W compared to the 7900 XT's 300W, but in testing, the 7900 XT consumed more power, peaking at 314W versus the 9070 XT's 306W.

The RX 9070 XT does not have a reference design, relying solely on third-party manufacturers. The Powercolor Radeon RX 9070 XT Reaper, with its compact triple-fan design, maintained temperatures at 72°C during testing. The card uses standard 8-pin PCI-E power connectors and includes three DisplayPort 2.1a and one HDMI 2.1b port, though a USB-C port would have been a welcome addition.

FSR 4

-----

AMD's introduction of FSR 4 with the Radeon RX 9070 XT addresses the long-standing need for a competitive AI upscaling solution akin to Nvidia's DLSS. FSR 4 uses AI accelerators to upscale lower-resolution images to native resolution, improving upon the temporal upscaling of FSR 3 with better image quality, albeit at a slight performance cost.

In testing, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 at 4K with FSR 3.1 on "Performance" settings achieved 134 fps, but with FSR 4, this dropped to 121 fps—a 10% performance loss with improved visuals. Similarly, Monster Hunter Wilds saw a 20% performance drop from 94 fps to 78 fps when switching from FSR 3 to FSR 4. Despite the performance hit, AMD assures that the enhanced image quality justifies the trade-off, particularly for single-player games where visuals are paramount. FSR 4 is an opt-in feature and can be toggled off in the Adrenalin software.

Performance

-----------

The Radeon RX 9070 XT, priced at $599, is not only 21% cheaper than the RTX 5070 Ti but also 2% faster on average. While some games favor the RTX 5070 Ti, the RX 9070 XT's competitive performance at this price point is a significant achievement for AMD.

Across various benchmarks, the RX 9070 XT proved to be about 17% faster than the RX 7900 XT, which launched at $899 two years ago, and 2% faster than the RTX 5070 Ti. At 4K resolution, the RX 9070 XT excels, maintaining its lead and positioning itself as an outstanding entry-level 4K graphics card, even with ray tracing enabled.

All tests were conducted using the latest drivers available. Nvidia cards used Game Ready Driver 572.60, while AMD cards were tested on Adrenalin 24.12.1, with the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 on pre-release drivers.

In 3DMark benchmarks, the RX 9070 XT outperformed the RX 7900 XT by 18% in Speed Way, though it lagged 18% behind the RTX 5070 Ti. However, in the Steel Nomad benchmark, it showed a 26% improvement over the RX 7900 XT and even beat the RTX 5070 Ti by 7%.

In specific game tests, the RX 9070 XT demonstrated strong performance. In Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, it led the RTX 5070 Ti by 15%. In Cyberpunk 2077, it was only 5% behind the RTX 5070 Ti despite the significant price difference. In Metro Exodus, it nearly matched the RTX 5070 Ti's performance without upscaling. Red Dead Redemption 2 showcased the RX 9070 XT's Vulkan performance, achieving 125 fps compared to the RTX 5070 Ti's 110 fps.

However, it wasn't all wins. In Total War: Warhammer 3, the RX 9070 XT fell 13% behind the RTX 5070 Ti. Conversely, in Assassins Creed Mirage, it outperformed the RTX 5070 Ti by 12%. In Black Myth Wukong, the RX 9070 XT's ray tracing performance was impressive, achieving 70 fps compared to the RTX 5070 Ti's 65 fps. Forza Horizon 5 also saw a slight performance edge for the RX 9070 XT.

Announced quietly at CES 2025, the Radeon RX 9070 XT feels like AMD's strategic move to offer a compelling alternative to Nvidia's more expensive Blackwell series. At $599, it represents a return to more reasonable pricing for high-performance graphics cards, offering a flagship experience reminiscent of the GTX 1080 Ti's impact in 2017.

In conclusion, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT stands out as a powerful, cost-effective solution for gamers seeking top-tier performance without the ultra-high-end price tag. Its competitive performance, coupled with the innovative FSR 4 technology, makes it a standout choice in today's GPU market.
