The Asus ROG Ally Z1 Extreme is a premium Windows 11 gaming handheld. As the higher-end model in Asus' lineup, it packs an AMD Zen 4-based Z1 Extreme CPU, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. Its 7-inch display offers crisp 1080p resolution with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Unlike the Linux-based Steam Deck, the ROG Ally runs Windows 11, providing greater flexibility for installing games from multiple platforms beyond Steam.
In our review of the Asus ROG Ally, Robert Anderson noted: "This handheld perfectly answers the call for a portable Xbox Game Pass machine. While it has some drawbacks like a complicated interface, limited battery life, and missing Steam Deck-style touchpads, it's undeniably fun to use. With its vibrant 1080p display that performs brilliantly in any lighting, powerful specs, and competitive pricing, it might finally be the Steam Deck rival we've been waiting for."
While newer gaming handhelds have surpassed the ROG Ally in performance, they come with significantly higher price tags. Asus' own ROG Ally X features the same Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor but upgrades to a larger battery, more RAM, increased storage, and an extra USB-C port. However, at $800 ($300 more than this deal), the improvements may not justify the cost for most buyers.
The Lenovo Legion Go S Steam Edition represents another strong alternative with its Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU, doubled RAM and storage, plus a larger 9-inch screen. As the first third-party Steam-based handheld, it outperforms the original Steam Deck. Unfortunately, its $830 price point means paying $330 extra over this ROG Ally deal.
