Avowed boasts a rich character creator, allowing players to customize their character's appearance and select a Background that shapes their backstory and narrative arc. This guide details each Background and its impact on gameplay.

Avowed offers five distinct Backgrounds: Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, and War Hero. Each provides unique dialogue options and a starting weapon, though all equipment and abilities remain accessible regardless of choice.

Background Details:

• Arcane Scholar: This scholarly character hails from Bragganhyl Academy, their treatise on soul lineages causing conflict with a local lord. Imprisoned, they were recruited by the Emperor for the imperial archives. They possess knowledge of the occult, law, history, and poetry.

• Court Augur: This Background features a tragic past, their mystical insights leading to suspicion and exile after a village crop failure. The Emperor appointed them as their personal mystic. Their connection to the spiritual realm grants unique dialogue options related to magic and the Gods, making them ideal for players envisioning a wizard archetype and potentially aligning well with the companion Giatta.

• Noble Scion: This character originates from a wealthy but morally corrupt noble family. Following the family's downfall, they sought the Emperor's protection and became a valuable ally. This Background suits players aiming for loyalty to the Empire and fulfilling its mandates.

• Vanguard Scout: Spared execution by the Empire, this character prefers wilderness to city life and politics. Their tracking and espionage skills make them a valuable asset. This Background is perfect for players favoring a hunter playstyle and potentially connecting with the companion Marius.

• War Hero: This character suppressed a Skaenite uprising, earning a place among elite warriors. Their loyalty and resilience are highly valued by the Emperor. This Background is suited to players desiring a warrior archetype and potentially forming a strong bond with the companion Kai.

Starting Weapons:

Each Background starts with a Common-quality, one-handed melee weapon:

• Arcane Scholar – Common Dagger
• Court Augur – Common Mace
• Noble Scion – Common Sword
• Vanguard Scout – Common Axe
• War Hero – Common Spear

These weapons are readily replaceable, emphasizing that Background selection should prioritize roleplaying preference rather than immediate combat advantage. Similar weapons are easily found early in the game.
