Nintendo has rolled out a new system update for the Switch, version 20.1.0, just days before the highly anticipated release of the Switch 2. While the patch notes are brief, the changes appear to be strategically aligned with the upcoming successor console.
As with most updates, Nintendo cites "general system stability improvements" as part of the enhancements in this firmware. More notably, there are visual tweaks to the Parental Control settings interface, bringing it more in line with modern design expectations.
One of the more noticeable updates is the change in the sound effect that plays when launching the Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) app from the Home Menu. According to reports and comparisons shared by X user @Nexusvoyager, the new sound is more vibrant and energetic—likely the same one that will greet users on the Switch 2 at launch.
Additionally, after relaunching the NSO app, users will notice a redesigned user interface. This aligns with what's expected on the Switch 2, suggesting that this update acts as a transitional step between the two platforms to ensure continuity in user experience.

Firmware analyst @OatmealDome noted some theme-related adjustments introduced in version 20.1.0. Specifically, the themes “Basic White” and “Basic Black” have been rebranded as “Basic Light” and “Basic Dark,” respectively. Moreover, the Nintendo Switch Online app now supports the Basic Dark theme, further reinforcing a more unified aesthetic across both devices.

For those planning to transition their data from the original Switch to the Switch 2 using local communication, having the latest firmware (Ver. 20.1.0) installed is mandatory. This ensures compatibility and a smooth transfer process once the new console becomes available.
With the Switch 2 scheduled for release on June 5, excitement continues to build. Despite an apparent early leak of a unit, the device reportedly requires a mandatory day-one patch to function, and the footage was quickly taken down due to copyright claims.
IGN has already shared impressions from playing Mario Kart World on the Switch 2, along with other key revelations such as performance upgrades for Switch 1 titles, variable refresh rate support conditions, and updated functionality for GameChat—which will require phone number verification to use.
While pre-orders sold out rapidly last month, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser has assured fans that supply will meet demand through the holiday season.
