Hulu may be bringing Buffy back from the dead. Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is nearing completion at Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially reprising her iconic role. While the series will focus on a new Slayer, Gellar's involvement is expected as a recurring character.

Adding star power, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (known for Nomadland and Eternals) is in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are set to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not participating in this reboot.

PlayWhedon, who oversaw the original Buffy series and its film predecessor, faced accusations of fostering a toxic work environment during production of both Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.

Plot details remain scarce beyond the central focus on a new Slayer and the possibility of Gellar's return.

The original series followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to battle supernatural forces. Her allies included Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired for seven seasons (1997-2003), spawning Angel and continuing its story through official comic books.
