John Wick director Chad Stahelski initially opposed Keanu Reeves' cameo in the spin-off Ballerina, but recognized its necessity to enhance the film's marketability.
The John Wick franchise has seen increasing box office success with each installment, culminating in John Wick 4 earning $440 million worldwide.
Reflecting on John Wick’s achievements, Chad Stahelski discussed Keanu Reeves’ role in Ana de Armas’ Ballerina during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He admitted he was strongly against including John Wick in Ballerina, noting the cameo was not part of the original script, but he understood its inclusion.
“The cameo wasn’t in the initial script,” Stahelski explained. “Honestly, I wasn’t fully on board. But I see its value, and we wanted to support [director Len Wiseman]. After John Wick 4’s massive success, we couldn’t revert to a small $18 million indie approach and expect growth.
“To compete at that level, we needed to give the film a strong start. From the studio’s perspective, including Wick in Ballerina, set in a unique timeline, was the simplest way to achieve that.”
Ballerina debuted last week, grossing $51 million globally, falling short of expectations for its opening weekend.
Despite Wick’s cameo, Ballerina’s modest opening suggests it didn’t draw enough fans. Lionsgate even added ‘From the World of John Wick’ to the title to emphasize its connection to the franchise.

More Wick spin-offs are in development, though Reeves won’t appear in all. For instance, Stahelski confirmed John Wick will not feature in Caine, the Donny Yen spin-off.
“The Donny Yen spin-off excludes the John Wick character,” he stated. “It centers on Donny Yen and pays homage to kung fu films, drawing inspiration from Chow Yun-fat, John Woo, and Wong Kar-wai, making it distinct within a beloved sub-genre.”
IGN’s review of From the World of John Wick: Ballerina scored an 8/10, noting: “Despite a sluggish start, Ballerina earns its place in The World of John Wick with inventive fight choreography and a compelling story and character that stand independently.”
