Nintendo has reportedly started distributing "Out of Stock" signage for the Switch 2 to retailers—even before the console officially launches.

The Switch 2 is scheduled for release in just two days, arriving on Thursday, June 5, with Nintendo anticipating overwhelming demand that may exceed available stock.

As shared on Reddit (via VGC), official Switch 2 "Out of Stock" placards are already appearing at U.S. retail locations alongside standard promotional materials for the console and its launch title, Mario Kart World. "These signs just arrived from Nintendo," posted a Reddit user employed at a store planning a midnight launch event. "They’re not holding back with the humor," they added.

Nintendo has already cautioned about limited Switch 2 availability, particularly in Japan where demand far outstrips supply. In the U.S., the company is navigating tariff uncertainties on Chinese-manufactured goods by prioritizing Vietnam-produced Switch 2 units.

Historically, nearly all successful console launches face inventory challenges, and the Switch 2 is no exception—with eager customers rushing to secure preorders. It seems almost inevitable that the console will sell out quickly.

The "Out of Stock" signage serves a practical purpose, helping store staff manage the flood of inquiries about remaining inventory.

"Retail employees know all too well—they’ll face endless customers staring at those signs, demanding they check 'the back' as if stockrooms are magical electronics wonderlands," one commenter observed.

Interestingly, labeling products as "Out of Stock" can also serve as subtle marketing—reinforcing the console’s popularity and creating urgency among consumers.

"This strategy fuels desire—highlighting high demand makes people feel they need it more," another fan noted.

Leading up to the Switch 2 launch, Nintendo has rolled out updates for the original Switch and Animal Crossing: New Horizons to prepare for the new hardware. Recently, we also got our first glimpse of enhanced Pokémon Scarlet and Violet running on the Switch 2.

For those fortunate enough to acquire a Switch 2 this week, Nintendo has shared crucial advice about leaving the protective screen film intact.
