As the much-anticipated release of Dune: Awakening approaches, developer Funcom is gearing up to handle a potentially crowded launch while preparing for its large-scale beta this weekend. Dive in to discover Funcom's comprehensive plans for server management and what fans can look forward to.
With Dune: Awakening drawing nearer to its June release, Funcom is reassuring fans of their readiness for a potentially crowded launch. In a detailed Steam post dated May 7, the developer addressed concerns following the first closed beta and outlined the game’s server and large-scale multiplayer systems.
Upon starting the game, players will select a server within a World, which consists of at least 20 servers. This setup allows players to interact with others across different servers within the same World.
Addressing fan concerns about server load and queues, Funcom anticipates a heavy load at launch, with some servers possibly reaching capacity. They've promised "thousands of servers grouped together in hundreds of Worlds available at launch," aiming to accommodate the influx of players.
Funcom highlighted the dynamic nature of server populations, stating, "While a Hagga Basin server can support 40 players concurrently, the ebb and flow of player numbers throughout the day means it can still serve as a home for several hundred players." They emphasized that rigorous testing during the closed beta has led to systems that manage server popularity and prevent overcrowding.
While Dune: Awakening focuses on large-scale multiplayer mechanics, it's also designed for solo play on Arrakis. However, single-player and private servers won't be available at launch but are slated for inclusion in post-launch updates.
Before the official launch, the game's large-scale beta weekend is set to provide fans with a taste of what's to come. In a post on the Dune: Awakening official website dated May 8, Funcom shared details about the upcoming beta event.
Access to the beta weekend can be obtained by wishlisting and requesting access on the game’s Steam page, signing up on the official website, or receiving an access code during the Global LAN party on May 10.

Funcom has confirmed that progress made during the beta weekend will not carry over to the final game.
