A fan has completely recreated the Elden Ring in Excel

A Reddit user, brightyh360, shared an incredible project on the r/excel subreddit: a top-down version of Elden Ring, painstakingly recreated in Microsoft Excel. This feat of programming took approximately 40 hours – 20 hours coding and 20 hours debugging. The creator states the effort was well worth it.

This impressive spreadsheet game boasts:

• A 90,000-cell map
• Over 60 weapons
• Over 50 enemies
• Character and weapon upgrade systems
• Three playable classes (tank, mage, assassin) with unique playstyles
• More than 25 armor sets
• Six NPCs with quests
• Four distinct endings

While completely free, the game utilizes keyboard shortcuts for control: CTRL + WASD for movement and CTRL + E for interaction. While Reddit moderators have verified the file's safety, users are advised to exercise caution due to the extensive use of macros.

Interestingly, the game's Erdtree has sparked comparisons to a Christmas tree, especially around the Christmas holiday. Reddit user Independent-Design17 suggests the Australian Christmas tree, Nuytsia floribunda, may have served as inspiration. They point out a striking visual similarity between the in-game Small Erdtrees and the Nuytsia. Furthermore, the connection deepens; Elden Ring features catacombs at the Erdtree's base, where souls are guided, mirroring the Aboriginal Australian view of Nuytsia as a "spirit tree," its vibrant colors associated with the sunset, the supposed path of spirits, and each flowering branch representing a departed soul.
