Nintendo has given us our first detailed glimpse at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just ahead of the highly anticipated console's launch next month. In a recent video featured on the Nintendo Today app, they showcased the official Switch 2 carry case, which includes slots designed to safely store up to six Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 cartridges.
As previously announced, Switch 2 cartridges are identical in size and shape to those of the original Switch, enabling the Switch 2 to utilize a single cartridge slot for games from both console generations. However, there's a notable distinction: the color of the cartridges. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red, a design choice that seems to be standard across all titles, not limited to just the Mario Kart World cartridge shown in the video. If you don't have access to the Nintendo Today app, you can view the video shared by OatmealDome on X / Twitter.
The top of the cartridge features a printed design sticker displaying the Switch 2 logo, differentiating it from the original Switch cartridges. Here's a closer look inside the official Switch 2 carrying case, which accommodates the console with Joy-Con 2 attached, six cartridges, and two Joy-Con 2 straps. It's worth noting that, as expected, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same dimensions as their predecessors.

(Also, Switch 2 cartridges seem to be the same size as Switch 1 cartridges, to no one's surprise.)

Apart from the color, Switch 2 cartridges remain unchanged, including the infamous foul-tasting coating applied by Nintendo to prevent accidental ingestion. "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta emphasized in a previous interview with GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
