This guide explains Hyper Light Breaker's lock-on targeting system and when to use it. The game's lock-on mechanic isn't always beneficial, and understanding its limitations is crucial for effective gameplay.
How to Target Enemies
To lock onto an enemy, center your view on them and press the right analog stick (R3). The game will automatically select the closest target, unless it's surrounded by others. A reticle will appear, indicating your locked-on target. Line of sight isn't required; the enemy just needs to be visible and within range.
Locking on alters character movement and camera control. The camera focuses on your target, causing your movements to often circle them. Fast-moving enemies can make the camera spin rapidly, potentially affecting your control.
To switch targets while locked on, use the right analog stick to select the nearest enemy within range. Pressing the right analog stick again cancels the lock-on, returning to the default free camera. The lock-on also automatically disengages if you move too far from your target.
When to Lock On vs. Free Cam
Lock-on is advantageous in one-on-one situations, such as boss fights or against strong (yellow health bar) enemies, after eliminating other mobs. However, it severely limits your awareness in multi-enemy encounters.
Free camera mode is generally preferable. Against multiple weak enemies or when clearing out smaller groups, lock-on hinders your ability to react to threats from different directions.
Against mini-bosses or bosses, lock-on is useful once other enemies are defeated. Keep the boss centered, but be ready to cancel the lock-on if more enemies appear, switching back to focus the boss when it's isolated.
During Extraction events, for example, prioritize clearing regular enemies before locking onto the mini-boss to avoid being overwhelmed. Use free cam for maximum situational awareness, then utilize lock-on for focused attacks on the mini-boss once the area is clear.
