Marvel's James Gunn has officially shut down the rumors. The DC Studios co-chair personally confirmed that the Waller TV series remains in active development.
Gunn responded directly to fan speculation on Threads when asked whether rumors about Waller being retooled into a Checkmate project were false. His simple one-word reply? "Yes."
When another fan pressed for clarity, asking "So Waller is still happening?", Gunn again responded decisively with just "Yes."
This direct confirmation comes as welcome news after Gunn previously admitted the project faced creative hurdles. During a February press event with co-head Peter Safran, Gunn acknowledged "Waller has experienced some production challenges, to be honest."
Details about the series remain scarce since its initial announcement during the January 2023 DCU slate reveal. Planned as a Peacemaker spinoff, the show would follow Viola Davis' Amanda Waller dealing with the fallout of her daughter (Danielle Brooks' Leota Adebayo) exposing Task Force X's existence. However, the 2023 Hollywood strikes forced extensive rewrites to align with the rebooted DCU timeline, creating significant delays.
The creative team includes Watchmen writer Christal Henry and Doom Patrol's Jeremy Carver, though concrete details remain under wraps. Gunn's latest confirmation breathes new life into the project, potentially eyeing a 2025 release. Fans will be watching closely for any updates.
