DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addressed online criticism regarding Superman's facial expression during a flight sequence featured in a recently released TV spot.

The 30-second promotional video showcased previously unseen footage: Lex Luthor exiting a helicopter in a snowy environment, possibly near the Fortress of Solitude, and Superman performing a barrel roll during high-speed flight over an icy landscape.

PlayThe scene sparked discussion, with some viewers noting Superman's face appeared unusually still while his hair and cape moved dynamically. Speculation of subpar CGI ensued. However, Gunn clarified on Threads that no CGI was used for Superman's face in that particular shot.

Responding to a fan's comment about the seemingly unnatural expression, Gunn stated, "There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real as is David." Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago, served as a filming location for the movie.

Therefore, the seemingly unusual expression is attributed to the wide-angle lens and natural facial expression of actor David Corenswet. The debate, however, continues, with some comparing the shot to a similar scene featuring Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, also directed by Gunn.

Despite the minor controversy, anticipation for the Superman film remains high. The movie, slated for a July 11, 2025 release, marks the inaugural film of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Further details, including analyses of the trailer's heroes and villains, Gunn's comments on Krypto's personality, and the film's thematic focus on hope, are available on IGN.
