Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, the anticipated GPS-based action-RPG designed for mobile platforms, has been officially cancelled. Despite this setback, there's a silver lining for fans of the franchise, as Square Enix has reassured that they are diligently working on Kingdom Hearts 4.

Originally, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was set to introduce players to the mystical realm of Scala ad Caelum, weaving a new, original story into the ongoing saga against the Heartless. The game was eagerly awaited and scheduled for release in 2024.

However, in a heartfelt statement shared on the game's X/Twitter account, Square Enix expressed their apologies to fans who were eagerly anticipating the game's launch. The statement revealed that the project was terminated due to challenges in ensuring long-term player satisfaction. While the specifics of these challenges were not disclosed, the company acknowledged the efforts of those who participated in the multiple closed beta tests and extended their gratitude.

Play"We wish to convey our heartfelt apologies to everyone who has been looking forward to the start of service," the statement read. "Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by lots of players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development.

"We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to everyone who gave us their support and assistance with the multiple closed beta tests. We are truly sorry to have to make this announcement."

Despite the cancellation, Square Enix remains committed to the Kingdom Hearts series, promising its continuation and confirming active development on Kingdom Hearts 4. They encouraged fans to stay tuned for further updates on the series.

PlayThis mention of Kingdom Hearts 4 marks the first official update in months, following a tiny, cryptic tease back in January. Despite being unveiled in September 2022 with a full cinematic trailer, Square Enix has maintained a low profile on the project, leaving fans eagerly awaiting more information. In line with the series' tradition, the anticipation continues to build.

Series director Tetsuya Nomura has hinted that Kingdom Hearts 4 will mark a significant shift, aiming to steer the narrative towards its conclusion after 22 years and 18 games in the series.
