Every superhero narrative thrives on its villains, and for Captain America: Brave New World, fans were introduced to The Leader, portrayed by actor Tim Blake Nelson. Nelson's transformation into the character involved practical effects and makeup, resulting in a visibly mutated appearance that diverged somewhat from the comic book version.

Blue Whale Studios, responsible for crafting The Leader's design and effects for the MCU film, recently shared insights into their initial vision for Sam Sterns' alter ego, which closely aligned with the comic books. The Atlanta-based special effects company initially opted for a sickly aesthetic, featuring an engorged head and pale green skin. This design, revealed on their Instagram, lacked the intricate mutation details seen in the final film version. They also posted a video showing the application of prosthetics to Nelson, offering fans a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes.

"We were originally commissioned to design and apply the practical makeup for The Leader on the remarkable Tim Blake Nelson in *Captain America: Brave New World*," Blue Whale Studios stated. "As is common in filmmaking, the narrative evolved, and during reshoots, the creative direction changed. Our version was ultimately not used in the final cut. Nonetheless, we remain incredibly proud of our work.

"Taking cues from the original comic book art, we crafted a look that was both grounded and iconic — staying true to the source while achieving a refined, natural realism. We were particularly pleased with how lightweight and comfortable the final makeup was for the actor — a testament to the dedication of our exceptional team."

This initial design closely mirrors The Leader's first appearance in the Marvel comic universe, which debuted in 1964’s Tales to Astonish #62. Interestingly, The Leader's final look in Brave New World echoes more recent iterations from the 2018 Immortal Hulk comics.

PlayThe Leader's potential as an MCU villain was first hinted at in 2008’s *The Incredible Hulk*, where Sam Sterns was exposed to Bruce Banner’s Gamma radiation-infused blood. At that time, he was still a normal human, but time transformed him into the character seen at the start of *Brave New World*.

Last May, reports surfaced that Captain America: Brave New World underwent reshoots to introduce a new villainous character, Sidewinder, leader of the Serpent Society, played by Giancarlo Esposito, known for his roles in Breaking Bad, Star Wars, and The Boys.

Ahead of the film's release, five-time WWE world champion Seth Rollins confirmed that his role was cut following extensive rewrites of the script and subsequent reshoots.
