Nintendo has officially announced a set of exciting new features coming to Nintendo 64 games available through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription. These additions include customizable controls, a rewind function, and a nostalgic CRT screen filter. However, it's worth noting that two of these enhancements—rewind and the CRT filter—are exclusive to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions from the gaming community, especially regarding the exclusivity of certain features. Many Switch users expressed disappointment that the CRT filter and rewind functions won’t be accessible on the current hardware. “The power of Switch 2,” one commenter noted sarcastically in response to Nintendo’s reveal video. “Being able to apply a CRT filter. Truly, this is the power of next-gen hardware.” Another user added, “Weird how a simple filter is locked behind Switch 2.”

To showcase the functionality of these features, Nintendo used several iconic titles. Super Mario 64 and Mario Golf were used to demonstrate the Rewind feature, allowing players to undo missteps instantly. Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards highlighted the CRT filter, simulating the visual experience of playing on vintage televisions. Meanwhile, Star Fox 64 was used to present the newly enhanced View/Change Controls option, which remains available on both versions of the console.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to launch on June 5, 2025. In preparation, Nintendo has updated the Nintendo Switch app to align with the version that will debut on the new system. Recently, IGN reported on a rare leak where someone claimed to have obtained a Switch 2 unit ahead of release, though it appears to be non-functional without the initial day-one patch. Additionally, the footage was quickly taken down due to copyright claims.
