Nintendo has recently filed a patent that hints at an intriguing new feature for the upcoming *Nintendo Switch 2*—its Joy-Con controllers may be designed to attach upside down, offering users greater flexibility in how they hold and use the console. The report, first highlighted by VGC, suggests that the Joy-Cons could function regardless of their orientation, thanks to a gyroscopic mechanism similar to what smartphones use to adjust screen rotation without locking the display.

This means players might be able to flip the main device and still enjoy seamless gameplay, with the system automatically adjusting controls to match the orientation. The redesigned Joy-Cons appear to rely on magnets rather than the rail-based attachment system of the original Switch, enabling them to be mounted on either side—or even inverted—without compromising functionality.

While this change may not represent a major hardware overhaul, it could give players more control over button placement, joystick positioning, and the location of ports like the headphone jack. If implemented in the final product, this flipping capability could open the door to creative gameplay mechanics or ergonomic customization options previously unavailable on the original Switch.

"The user can use the game system by mounting the right controller and the left controller on the opposite side to the main body device," reads part of the patent documentation. It further explains that users could operate the system with the main device flipped vertically, allowing for a more natural way to plug in accessories like headphones from below.

Nintendo is expected to reveal more details during a special Nintendo Direct event scheduled for April 2 at 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK time. While the company has yet to officially confirm a release window, rumors suggest the *Nintendo Switch 2* could launch between June and September 2025. This speculation aligns with upcoming hands-on events reportedly planned through June and comments from Nacon, publisher of *Greedfall 2*, indicating a pre-September release date.

The *Nintendo Switch 2* was briefly showcased in a trailer back in January, confirming features such as backward compatibility and the inclusion of a second USB-C port. However, many key details—including the full lineup of games, exact specs, and the purpose of a mysterious new Joy-Con button—remain under wraps. One popular theory gaining attention is the idea of a Joy-Con mouse mode, which could hint at unique new gameplay or productivity applications.
