Pedro Pascal has openly acknowledged fan concerns about his casting as Reed Richards in Marvel's upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps, revealing Robert Downey Jr. offered him reassurance during the process.
The 50-year-old actor prepares for his MCU debut this July as part of The Fantastic Four ensemble. Following underperforming MCU releases this year (Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*), Disney and Marvel Studios are banking on this being their 2025 tentpole success – putting Pascal's casting under particular scrutiny.
In a Vanity Fair interview, Pascal admitted feeling more publicly debated for this role than any previous project – including HBO's The Last of Us (as Joel), Game of Thrones (Oberyn Martell), and The Mandalorian.
"I'm sensing genuine excitement because it aligns with our creative vision – putting our hearts on full display within this genre," Pascal remarked. "But you never know if audiences will embrace that sincerity."
"This role has drawn more skepticism than anything I've done," he continued. "'He's too old.' 'Wrong casting.' 'Needs to shave.'"

Casting debates have swirled since Pascal's announcement as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic. While some critique his mustachioed look in early images, others argue we've seen minimal footage – and remind fans that performance transcends physical resemblance.
The actor revealed an unlikely mentor in Robert Downey Jr., who transitions from Iron Man to Doctor Doom. The two will share screen time in 2026's Avengers: Doomsday, though Pascal remained characteristically tight-lipped about plot details.
"His generosity immediately puts you at ease," Pascal said of RDJ. "He creates space for all your uncertainties and hesitations."
Marvel Studios appears bullish about this iteration of The Fantastic Four, having reportedly greenlit a sequel weeks before the film's premiere – an unusually early vote of confidence.
