Pokemon TCG Pocket Faces Criticism Over Recent Update

High Costs of Trade Tokens Spark Player Concerns

The trading feature for Pokemon TCG Pocket launched on January 29, 2025, but has faced significant player backlash, prompting DeNA to announce upcoming improvements via a post on X on February 1, 2025.

Introduced on January 29, 2025, the trading system lets players exchange 1-4 Diamond and 1-Star rarity cards from Genetic Apex and Mythical Island booster packs. While useful for completing collections, restrictions like limited card options, a new in-game currency, and steep trading costs have frustrated many players.

Addressing the criticism, DeNA stated they are “actively exploring solutions to enhance the trading experience.” They plan to introduce “multiple ways to acquire trade tokens, including through event rewards.” Currently, only 1-Star cards are tradable.

Trade tokens, required for transactions, are earned by sacrificing higher-rarity cards. For example, trading a 4-Diamond card, such as an ex Pokemon, costs 500 tokens, while players earn only 100 tokens for a 1-Star card or 300 for 2-Star and 3-Star immersive cards. This forces players to sacrifice rare or multiple cards to trade.

DeNA explained that the trading system’s strict rules aim to “prevent abuse from bots and multi-account activities.” Their goal is to “maintain a balanced and fair environment while preserving the joy of collecting cards central to Pokemon TCG Pocket.”

While further updates to the trading system remain undisclosed, DeNA is likely assessing potential exploits before rolling out changes.

Genetic Apex Booster Pack Confusion After Space-Time Smackdown Launch

Another issue arose with the January 29, 2025, release of the Space-Time Smackdown booster packs. Some players, voicing concerns on Reddit, feared that Genetic Apex booster packs had been removed, as the home screen only displayed Mythical Island and Space-Time Smackdown packs.

In reality, players can switch to Genetic Apex packs via the “Select other booster packs” option in the bottom right corner of the pack selection screen. The small, easily overlooked text led to confusion, with some players worrying the game’s first booster pack was discontinued.

While possibly due to suboptimal design, some players suspected the layout was intentional to promote the newer packs. Since not all players have completed their Genetic Apex collections, fans have urged DeNA to update the home screen to display all three booster pack sets clearly.

DeNA has not yet responded to this concern, but this clarification should reassure players that Genetic Apex packs remain accessible for completing their collections.
