Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer an unconventional feature: computer mouse functionality. While the likelihood of widespread developer adoption remains uncertain, this aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.
The intriguing clue comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has already yielded numerous Switch 2 rumors. LiC's latest discovery involves shipping manifests listing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles"—the typical bottom material of a computer mouse—intended for "game console handles." This strongly implies mouse-like functionality for the upcoming console.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they are new, unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, appears large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, potentially requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handheld Consoles
While innovative for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, which transforms into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing to improve surface glide. This, along with the Legion GO's magnetic controller rails—a rumored Switch 2 feature—offers a potential preview of Nintendo's hybrid console design.
