Russell Crowe is joining Henry Cavill for Chad Stahelski's Highlander reboot, marking their first on-screen reunion since 2013's Man of Steel. According to Collider, the Oscar-winning actor will play Cavill's mentor - a reinterpretation of Sean Connery's iconic role from the original 1986 fantasy film.
The remake will reportedly modernize the Scottish swordsman's centuries-spanning journey, shifting its timeline from 16th-century Highlands to contemporary New York and Hong Kong. Stahelski teased the potential for expansive action sequences and unexpected romantic elements while preserving the core mentor-protagonist relationship.
Cavill confirmed his starring role back in 2021, expressing enthusiasm about collaborating with Stahelski: "Being comfortable with swordplay and working with Chad's visionary direction creates unparalleled potential. We're utilizing every storytelling tool available to craft this adventure - one neither I nor audiences will soon forget."
The casting continues Crowe and Cavill's professional relationship that began in Man of Steel, where Crowe portrayed Superman's biological father Jor-El. Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists are developing the property as a potential franchise starter, with Stahelski overseeing creative direction across multiple installments.
The project currently lacks a release date but features a screenplay by Michael Finch (John Wick: Chapter 4). Fans can revisit Stahelski's vision for expanding the Highlander universe while awaiting production updates.
