Ryan Reynolds, known for his role as Deadpool, recently shared on The Box Office Podcast that he pitched an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney. While it remains uncertain whether Disney will greenlight the project, Reynolds expressed his vision for an R-rated Star Wars endeavor that focuses on emotional depth rather than vulgarity. He suggested utilizing lesser-known characters, emphasizing that an R-rating could serve as a "Trojan Horse for emotion," allowing for deeper storytelling.
Reynolds, who has a successful track record with R-rated films like Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine—the latter being the highest-grossing R-rated movie with over $1.3 billion in earnings (according to Box Office Mojo)—believes in the potential of an R-rated Star Wars project. However, he clarified that he wouldn't want to star in it, preferring instead to contribute behind the scenes as a producer or writer. He noted the importance of surprise and scarcity in such IPs, despite the constant content stream on Disney+.
While Reynolds continues to be involved with Marvel, exploring ideas like a Deadpool and X-Men movie, the realization of an R-rated Star Wars project seems distant. In the meantime, Disney is expanding the Star Wars universe with projects like Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, although details about this film remain sparse.
