She remains a supporter but has no plans to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe anytime soon, even requesting the removal of a credit she received for Thunderbolts*.
“I asked for my credit to be removed since I had no role in it,” the Black Widow actress shared in a recent Interview Magazine discussion with Thunderbolts* star David Harbour. Speaking on the film’s release day, she told Harbour, who reprised his role as Red Guardian from Black Widow, that she hadn’t yet watched the movie. When Harbour noted her executive producer credit on Thunderbolts*, she clarified her request.
Harbour teased, "You disliked the movie that much?" Johansson quickly responded, "No, you’re just hoping that’s true," before affirming her pride in the team behind the film.
According to IMDB, Johansson’s executive producer credit has been removed from the film, which premiered in theaters last month.
In a Deadline interview, the actress expressed openness to directing an MCU project, despite stepping back from acting in the franchise.
“Producing Black Widow and shaping its story, especially the dynamic between Natasha and Yelena,” she said, “shows there’s a way to preserve themes of human connection, family, and disappointment in a massive universe. It could be exciting to explore.”
Marvel’s Thunderbolts* rebranded to New Avengers shortly after its release, with marketing highlighting a real-world extension of the on-screen rivalry between Sam Wilson’s Avengers and the new superhero team. The film sets the stage for Phase 6’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
