Director Andy Muschietti, known for It and The Flash, recently offered an update on the long-awaited Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation. Initially announced by Sony Pictures in 2009, the project has seen several delays. While fans speculated about its cancellation, Muschietti confirmed it remains active.
The director cited challenges related to the IP's popularity and the substantial budget required for such a large-scale project. He revealed that several script versions exist, and he has a preferred draft. This aligns with Sony's recent announcement at CES 2025 of several other video game adaptations, including Helldivers, Horizon Zero Dawn, and an animated Ghost of Tsushima film.
Muschietti, while not a self-described "big gamer," considers Shadow of the Colossus a masterpiece and has played it multiple times. He acknowledges the game's enduring impact, referencing its influence on titles like Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2. The film aims to capture the game's unique atmosphere and iconic colossi, hoping to resonate with existing fans and introduce newcomers to this timeless classic. The original game's director, Fumito Ueda, who has since founded GenDesign and unveiled a new sci-fi title at The Game Awards 2024, was involved in the early stages of the film's production. Despite the 2018 PlayStation 4 remake, the legacy of Shadow of the Colossus continues its journey towards the big screen.
