Steamforged Games' board game adaptations of popular video game franchises, including Monster Hunter, Devil May Cry, Sea of Thieves, Gears of War, and the upcoming Elden Ring, are noteworthy. This review focuses on their Resident Evil trilogy: Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3.

Released in 2019, 2021, and 2023 respectively, these games share similar mechanics. 1-4 players navigate perilous environments – dark corridors, burning streets, and sinister labs – recreating the storylines of the respective video games. Highly detailed miniatures represent both the terrifying creatures and the heroic survivors.

Gameplay involves three phases per turn: Action, Reaction, and Tension. Players have four actions: move, manipulate doors, search, trade, use items, or attack. Enemies react, moving towards or attacking the active player, who rolls dice to evade. The Tension phase involves drawing cards with varying consequences. Combat uses dice rolls against weapon stats and abilities. Successful attacks may kill enemies, push them back, or miss entirely. Shooting attracts enemies from adjacent rooms.

Each game features multiple scenarios playable as standalone experiences or a connected campaign. Levels are built using tiles with tokens representing doors, items, and other elements. Inventory, health, and other data carry over between scenarios in campaign mode. One-off games provide starting gear and information. Some crossover between games is possible, allowing for character and tile mixing.

Individual Game Reviews:

  • Resident Evil: The most refined entry, incorporating improvements from previous games and new mechanics. Features support characters on special missions. Uses card-based map building for quicker setup. Standard zombies persist after death, requiring kerosene to burn their bodies.

  • Resident Evil 2: The series' starting point. Features a linear campaign progression. Some minor component issues, such as dark tiles and missing parts. Despite these, it offers strategic gameplay and challenging scenarios.

  • Resident Evil 3: Offers a more open-ended campaign flow. Introduces a Danger Tracker reflecting the escalating threat. The scenario map is less polished than other components.

Each game's expansions add new scenarios, characters, enemies, items, and gameplay modes, significantly extending replayability. The Resident Evil board game series offers a compelling survival horror experience for fans of the video games and board game enthusiasts alike.
