Silent Hill f is not a sequel to any existing Silent Hill games. Instead, it offers a standalone story, much like Silent Hill 2, that is "independent from the series." This was confirmed by publisher Konami on X/Twitter, emphasizing that the latest installment in the horror series, typically set in a sleepy east-coast American resort town, will be "a completely new title" designed for both new and veteran players to enjoy.

This approach is not unprecedented for Silent Hill. While Silent Hill 1, Silent Hill 3, and Silent Hill Origins are connected, other entries, notably Silent Hill 2, have less direct ties to the town. Additionally, parts of Silent Hill 4: The Room and Homecoming occur outside the titular town. Konami's statement clarifies that understanding the 1960s Japanese setting of Silent Hill f does not require prior knowledge of the 26-year-old series.

Silent Hill f transports players to 1960s Japan, following the journey of Shimizu Hinako, a teenager grappling with societal and familial pressures. The narrative, crafted by Ryukishi07, the mind behind the When They Cry visual novel series, marks a significant shift as it was the first Silent Hill game to receive an 18+ rating certification in Japan, as showcased in the Japanese-language reveal trailer from March.

While still in development, the game's certification could change. Previously, Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, and Silent Hill: The Room received CERO:C ratings for ages 15 and up in Japan, while other international titles in the series were rated CERO:C or CERO:D (ages 17+). Silent Hill f is rated Mature in the U.S., PEGI 18 in Europe, and CERO:Z in Japan.

No release date has been announced for Silent Hill f, and details remain sparse about No Code's upcoming Silent Hill game, Townfall.
