Ryukishi07, the mastermind behind Higurashi and When They Cry, has shared insights into his work on Silent Hill f, comparing the game's blend of supernatural and psychological horror to "salad dressing."

While anticipation for Silent Hill f—the franchise's first mainline entry since 2012—continues to build, writer Ryukishi07 had remained largely silent until his appearance at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles last month. His panel discussion with producer Motoi Okamoto and composer Akira Yamaoka offered a rare glimpse into his creative process.

Ryukishi07 explained that he approached this project differently from his usual novels, focusing on a singular thematic core. According to Famitsu (via Automaton), he described how players might initially struggle to separate the game's supernatural elements from its psychological horror, as both will feel intertwined. However, as the story unfolds, these layers will distinguish themselves—much like oil and vinegar in a salad dressing despite their initial mixture.

Though the metaphor may seem unusual, Ryukishi07 clarified that Ebisugaoka's mysteries will gradually reveal themselves while leaving room for interpretation—a hallmark of the Silent Hill experience fans cherish.

He also emphasized that Silent Hill f, while terrifying, will delve deeply into human emotions like love and sorrow, continuing the series' tradition of psychological depth.

Konami has confirmed this is not a direct sequel but a standalone story accessible to newcomers. Set in 1960s Japan, it follows Hinako Shimizu, a teenager grappling with societal pressures. Notably, the game earned Japan's first 18+ rating for the franchise.

Producer Okamoto teased enhanced combat, striking audio-visual contrasts, and puzzle designs rooted in psychological torment. Silent Hill f arrives September 25 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
