Smash Together, an unofficial dating platform designed for Super Smash Bros. enthusiasts to connect, announced it received a cease-and-desist letter just before its planned open beta launch.

The app was set to begin its open beta on May 15, following months of development. However, on May 13, the official account shared a melancholic Yoshi meme with the caption: "We got cease and desisted." (Credit to Automaton for the find.)

The developers did not disclose the source of the cease-and-desist, though many speculate it came from Nintendo, given the app’s Super Smash Bros. theme.

SmashTogether marketed itself as the "ultimate dating hub for Super Smash Bros. fans," promising to pair users with their "perfect Doubles partner, on and off the battlefield" using a specialized matchmaking algorithm to "find your ideal Smash match."

App screenshots showcased features like selecting your preferred character, or "main," alongside notable tournament achievements and playful prompts tailored to the Smash community, such as, "I'm looking for... Someone who can make it out of pools at a major."

Beyond potential intellectual property and copyright issues, the concept of a dating app centered on a game like Super Smash Bros. likely prompted the legal action.

No updates have emerged from SmashTogether regarding plans to pivot to a version without the Super Smash Bros. branding. For now, please note the effort made in this article to avoid any "smashing" puns.
