Next month, PlayStation Plus subscribers will see 22 games removed from the service's library, including high-profile titles like Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and the last playable versions of Sony's first-party titles Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. This removal is set to occur on May 20, 2025.
PlayStation Plus is an essential online gaming service for PlayStation users, offering a range of benefits such as free monthly games, exclusive trials, online multiplayer access, and special member discounts. For Extra and Premium members, the service also provides access to an extensive catalog featuring hundreds of current and classic games.
According to Push Square, the impending removal of these 22 games from the PS Plus Premium library includes two notable first-party PS3 games. This move is particularly significant for Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, as they are no longer available for purchase on the PS Store. This makes the PS Plus Premium streaming service the final platform where these games can be played, unless players own both games and a functional PS3.
The Resistance series, developed by Insomniac Games after their work on the Ratchet and Clank franchise, consists of alternate history first-person shooters. Three titles were released for the PS3 before Insomniac shifted focus to other projects such as Marvel's Spider-Man and new Ratchet and Clank games. Both Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 were added to the PS Plus library at the end of 2024, and their removal less than a year later is noteworthy.
While it's rare for Sony to remove its first-party games from the service, there have been precedents, such as the unexpected removal of Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West in August 2024. However, unlike those titles, which remained available for purchase, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 will no longer be accessible on modern consoles after their departure from PS Plus.
It's interesting to note that Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution will continue to be available on the service. Additionally, the more recent first-party PS4 title InFamous: Second Son is also scheduled to leave PS Plus.
The Resistance series has been inactive for some time. In February, Insomniac's founder and outgoing president Ted Price mentioned efforts to develop Resistance 4, which ultimately did not come to fruition. Similar to Guerrilla's Killzone series, Resistance has been sidelined.
