Civilization VII has arrived, and while its Steam user reviews currently sit at "Mixed," Take-Two's CEO remains confident that dedicated fans will ultimately embrace the game. Early access, typically purchased by hardcore Civilization enthusiasts, has provided a platform for vocal feedback, highlighting concerns about the user interface, limited map variety, and missing features.

Firaxis has acknowledged this feedback, promising UI improvements, the addition of cooperative multiplayer teams, and a greater diversity of map types, among other enhancements.

In an interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the mixed reception, including Eurogamer's critical 2/5 review, but expressed optimism, stating that the "legacy Civ audience" will grow to appreciate the game with more playtime. He cited a Metacritic score of 81 and numerous reviews exceeding 90 as evidence of positive reception. Zelnick attributed initial negative reactions to the innovative changes implemented by Firaxis, suggesting that players initially apprehensive about these changes will eventually recognize their value. He specifically mentioned ongoing UI improvements as an area of focus.

Zelnick's comments regarding initial apprehension among hardcore fans directly address the significant changes introduced in Civilization VII. The game's campaign structure, spanning Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern ages with simultaneous Age Transitions, including civilization selection and Legacy retention, represents a departure from previous iterations. Despite this, Zelnick believes this innovative system will ultimately be appreciated.

In the near term, however, Firaxis faces the challenge of improving player sentiment, particularly on Steam. The Steam user review rating is critical for the game's success, impacting both public perception and its visibility on the platform.
