World of Warcraft is set to enhance its gameplay with the introduction of two exhilarating new racing types in Patch 11.1: Breakneck D.R.I.V.E. races and Skyrocket races, which utilize Goblin jetpacks. These races are designed to replace Skyriding in the new zone, Undermine, which will debut in the first major content update for World of Warcraft: The War Within.
Patch 11.1, dubbed Undermined, will transport players to Undermine, a sprawling subterranean metropolis and the heart of Goblin culture. This expansive zone will not permit traditional flying, instead offering players the D.R.I.V.E. system—a dynamic, customizable, car-like mount that promises to zip through the city's streets at speeds surpassing those of Skyriding. With the announcement of Patch 11.1, World of Warcraft confirmed the introduction of Breakneck races, which are designed to fully exploit the capabilities of the D.R.I.V.E. system.
In addition to Breakneck races, Skyrocket races introduce a novel challenge where players use Goblin jetpacks to navigate the skies. These races blend elements of existing flight systems: players cannot halt mid-air as with Steady flight, yet they maintain momentum and altitude unlike in Skyriding. Insights from the Public Test Realm, shared by WoW content creator MrGM, reveal that racers can increase their speed by collecting rings, though this comes with the trade-off of reduced turning responsiveness, adding an extra layer of difficulty to the Skyrocket races.
Because Skyriding is not available in Undermine, the zone will not feature Skyriding races. Instead, players can participate in both Breakneck and Skyrocket races, striving to achieve Bronze, Silver, and Gold times in various achievements. Additionally, reverse versions of all four Skyrocket and D.R.I.V.E. Breakneck races are included, although there are no Advanced or Challenge courses akin to those found in some Skyriding races.

The initial reaction to the Skyrocket races has been varied. While some players are eager to experience this new mode, others have expressed concerns about the jetpack's stiff and unreactive flight mechanics compared to Skyriding. However, with Patch 11.1 still under development, there remains an opportunity for Blizzard to refine these races before their release, expected around February.
