George R. R. Martin, the acclaimed author behind the Game of Thrones saga, has once again fueled speculation about the possibility of an Elden Ring movie. Martin, who co-created the intricate world and lore of FromSoftware's Elden Ring, has hinted that discussions about a film adaptation are underway. However, he also pointed out a major obstacle to his potential involvement: his ongoing commitment to finishing The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series.

Elden Ring, which hit the shelves in 2022 and became one of the year's top-selling games, owes much of its rich narrative to Martin's collaboration with FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki. Their partnership was heavily highlighted in the game's marketing, and the credits acknowledge Martin's crucial role in crafting the game's universe.

During IGN Fan Fest 2025, Martin was asked about his interest in contributing to a potential Elden Ring sequel. While he sidestepped the question about a sequel, he did drop a tantalizing hint about a movie adaptation. "Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring," he revealed.

This isn't the first time Martin has teased the idea of an Elden Ring movie. FromSoftware's president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has also expressed openness to the idea, provided that a "very strong partner" steps in. In an interview with The Guardian, Miyazaki emphasized the importance of collaboration with a knowledgeable partner to bring Elden Ring to the screen. "I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example," he said, highlighting the need for trust and alignment in any such venture.

Yet, Martin's potential involvement in an Elden Ring film faces a significant hurdle: his dedication to completing The Winds of Winter. "We'll see if that [the Elden Ring movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know," he told IGN. "I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do."

Fans of Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series have been eagerly awaiting The Winds of Winter for over a decade. Martin himself has acknowledged the delays, stating in December, "Unfortunately, I am 13 years late. Every time I say that, I’m [like], 'How could I be 13 years late?' I don’t know, it happens a day at a time." Despite the setbacks, he remains committed to finishing the book, even as some fans doubt it will ever see the light of day. "But that’s still a priority," he insisted. "A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!"

The wait for The Winds of Winter has been increasingly frustrating for fans, especially since the last book, A Dance With Dragons, was published in 2011—the same year HBO's Game of Thrones premiered, bringing even more attention to Martin's fantasy world.

Reflecting on his contributions to Elden Ring, Martin shared insights into his worldbuilding process with IGN. "When they came to me, FromSoftware, they wanted the world. They knew the action of Elden Ring that the players would get into would be in the ‘present.’ But something had created that present, had created that world. So where did that world come from? And I've done a lot of world building, most notably on Westeros and the backgrounds of A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones. And I like doing world building. So what had happened 5,000, 10,000 years before the current day action in Elden Ring that led them to that place? And I had some ideas about the magic and the runes. There was a lot about runes. And I worked it all out."

Martin described the collaborative process with FromSoftware as fascinating, involving multiple sessions where the team would showcase their progress. "It was interesting that the team flew in and we had a number of sessions and they would fly back and do their magic, and then they would come back here a couple months later and show me what they had, which was always amazing to see what they came up with."

When asked if all his written material was used in the game or if there was more that could be utilized in future projects, Martin confirmed that there is always more to the story than what appears on screen. "Yeah, I think especially when you're world building, there's always more that you actually see on the screen," he noted, drawing parallels to other epic fantasy works like those of J.R.R. Tolkien, where extensive backstories and histories exist beyond what's directly presented to the audience.
