Jar of Sparks, NetEase-Backed Studio, Pauses Development on First Game, Seeks New Publisher
Jerry Hook, former design lead for Halo Infinite, announced that his studio, Jar of Sparks, has temporarily halted development on its debut project. The studio, established in 2022 under NetEase's umbrella, was initially envisioned to create "next-generation narrative-driven action games." However, the studio is now actively searching for a new publishing partner to realize its creative vision.
NetEase, a prominent global video game company, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals. The latter's successful launch and upcoming content, including the addition of the Fantastic Four, highlight NetEase's commitment to its existing projects.
Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause, emphasizing the studio's ambition to create "something truly new and exciting." While layoffs weren't explicitly stated, Hook indicated that the team will be exploring new opportunities and assisting members in finding new roles in the coming weeks. This situation mirrors the experience of other veteran developers who have partnered with NetEase, such as Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who formed GPTRACK50 Studios in 2022.
The news comes amidst a period of transition for the Halo franchise, following challenges with Halo Infinite's post-launch content and the reception of the Paramount+ series. However, 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and the shift to Unreal Engine suggest a potential revitalization for the franchise.
While Jar of Sparks' future remains uncertain, the team's dedication to innovation and the search for a suitable publishing partner offer a glimmer of hope for their ambitious project. The industry will be watching closely to see what comes next for this promising studio and its talented team.
