Speaking at the PlayStation Partner Awards 2025 Japan/Asia, Monster Hunter Wilds director Yuya Tokuda shared his hope that more players would come back to the game, particularly in light of the new content and updates released since launch.
The latest installment in the beloved series has experienced a significant decline in its player base. This stems largely from veteran hunters who found the core game too accessible, with a common sentiment in the community being that it heavily favored newcomers.
This left many long-time fans feeling let down, causing them to step away early and draw comparisons to the previous title, Monster Hunter: World. The launch of MH Wilds attracted criticism focused on the perceived lack of challenge in the base game and suboptimal performance optimization.

In a live interview with IGN, Tokuda acknowledged this feedback, explaining, "We analyzed where beginners tended to get stuck, using data from Monster Hunter: World, among other sources... As a result of making the game more approachable for new players and those who previously couldn't finish it, I believe the difficulty curve ended up being a bit insufficient for our existing fanbase."
To tackle these concerns, the development team has been steadily introducing more demanding content through subsequent title updates and collaborative events, aiming to lure hunters back. Tokuda added, "If you completed the game shortly after release and then put it down, I'd be grateful if you'd consider giving it another chance."
Despite the rocky start, Monster Hunter Wilds has received numerous updates and enhancements. Tokuda continues to encourage players to revisit the title, highlighting the progress and refinements made since the initial release.

During the PlayStation Partner Awards 2025 Japan/Asia, the Monster Hunter Wilds team was recognized with both the Grand Award and the User's Choice Award—a testament to their journey of improvement post-launch. Reflecting on the project, the team humbly acknowledged the tough criticism they faced initially and their continuous work to enhance the game.
"Right after release, we apologized for the issues related to the amount of content and the difficulty balance. Even so, we were incredibly honored to receive several awards, including the Users' Choice Award," Tokuda remarked. He thanked players for their input and support, which helped the team prioritize crucial updates.

"Monster Hunter is a franchise known for its regular updates, but player feedback has been invaluable throughout this process. To make Monster Hunter Wilds the best it can be, the voices of our fans have given us the drive to push forward," added Ryozo Tsujimoto, the game's producer, in the IGN interview. "We still have more updates planned, and we'll keep giving it our all."
The team believes the honest critiques from the community were instrumental in earning this award. As they persist in delivering fixes and new content, they remain optimistic that players will continue to enjoy the evolving world of Monster Hunter Wilds.
