The Fall Guy director David Leitch is reportedly in negotiations to helm Netflix's live-action Gears of War film adaptation.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leitch - known for directing blockbusters like Atomic Blonde (2017), Deadpool 2 (2018), Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw (2019), and Bullet Train (2022) - may take charge of bringing Microsoft's beloved third-person shooter franchise to the big screen.
Leitch and producer Kelly McCormick would reportedly produce alongside Gears developer The Coalition, with Jon Spaihts (Dune) attached to write the screenplay.
Nearly three years have passed since Netflix acquired the Gears of War rights, but development appears to be accelerating. Sources indicate an adult animated series is also planned as a follow-up to the film, with potential for additional projects should these adaptations succeed.
The burning question remains: Who will portray iconic protagonist Marcus Fenix? Former WWE star Dave Bautista has vigorously campaigned for the role, receiving vocal support from Gears co-creator Cliff Bleszinski.
Video game adaptations continue riding unprecedented momentum following successes like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Minecraft adaptations, Sonic films, Uncharted, Mortal Kombat reboots, and Resident Evil projects.

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer stated earlier this year that despite Halo's mixed reception, the company remains committed to adapting its gaming IPs. Speaking in March, Spencer emphasized their growing confidence in transmedia projects:
"We're learning and evolving through this process. Every adaptation - whether Halo or Fallout - provides valuable experience," Spencer explained.
"While some projects may underperform, we're encouraged by our progress. The Xbox community can expect more adaptations as we continue developing this expertise."
Meanwhile in gaming, The Coalition continues developing Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel installment currently without confirmed release timing.
