The film adaptation of the acclaimed video game "Sleeping Dogs," which was officially canceled earlier this month, may see a revival thanks to efforts from Marvel star Simu Liu. As reported by Newsweek, Liu responded to a fan's plea on X/Twitter for a movie version of the 2012 game, expressing his commitment to the project. "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen," Liu stated, signaling his active involvement in bringing the story to life.
Originally announced in 2017, the adaptation was set to feature Donnie Yen in the lead role. However, the project vanished from the radar a year later, and just a few weeks ago, Yen confirmed its cancellation. "I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights," Yen explained. "I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?" His comments reflect the frustrations and complexities of navigating the film industry.
The hope for a cinematic continuation of the action-packed Hong Kong-set franchise seemed extinguished until Liu's response to a random social media post reignited the possibility. While it remains uncertain whether Liu will secure the rights or successfully revive the project, his involvement has sparked renewed interest and optimism among fans.
"Sleeping Dogs" was originally released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, and follows the gripping narrative of detective Wei Shen as he goes undercover to infiltrate one of Hong Kong's notorious Triad crime syndicates. The game received widespread acclaim, earning an impressive 8/10 from IGN. Despite its success, no sequels were developed, leaving fans eager for more of the gripping story and dynamic gameplay.
