WWE 2K25: A Solid Evolution, But Is It Revolutionary?
2K's WWE series, revitalized in 2022, continues its iterative improvements with WWE 2K25. Promising additions like "The Island," a revamped story mode, and a new "Bloodline Rules" match type, were unfortunately unavailable for preview. My hands-on time focused on core gameplay and the updated Showcase Mode.
The Showcase Mode, centered around The Bloodline, offers three match types: recreating history, creating history, and—most intriguingly—altering history. Experiencing these variations (recreating Nia Jax's win, creating a Wild Samoans vs. Dudley Boyz match, and altering a Reigns vs. Rollins bout) showcased the mode's improved fun and unique perspectives for WWE fans. However, some minor issues persist.
While the over-reliance on lengthy real-life footage ("Slingshot") from previous iterations is reduced, it's not entirely eliminated. Key moments are now recreated in-engine, resulting in a smoother experience and better integration of iconic moments. These sequences are also shorter, minimizing time away from gameplay control. However, in the Nia Jax match, control was completely removed during the final pin, an aspect that could use improvement. The checklist system for triggering live-action sequences remains, but optional timed objectives with cosmetic rewards, and the removal of penalties for failure, represent a significant improvement. The ability to alter historical match outcomes adds a fresh element for hardcore fans.
Core gameplay remains largely unchanged, retaining the successful grappling system from WWE 2K24. However, the return of chain wrestling adds a strategic layer to the beginning of matches, allowing players to gain an advantage. The submission mini-game also returns, though it's optional, as are other quick-time events. Weapon throwing, a highlight of WWE 2K24, returns with an expanded roster of weapons and new backstage brawl environments, including the WWE archives. The inclusion of Logan Paul's Prime Hydration bottle as a weapon is a humorous touch.
A major addition is intergender gameplay, finally allowing matches between male and female wrestlers. Combined with the largest roster ever (300+ wrestlers), this opens up numerous previously unavailable matchups.
A new "Underground" match type, a ropeless exhibition match in a Fight Club-esque setting, was briefly showcased. A full match and detailed explanation will be available later.
In conclusion, WWE 2K25 builds upon a strong foundation with smart, incremental improvements. While the unpreviewed features may significantly impact the overall experience, the changes experienced suggest a solid evolution, rather than a revolution, of the series.
