The Fantastic Four: First Steps will bring several major characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but director Matt Shakman confirms John Malkovich's Red Ghost won't be among them.

Details about Malkovich's exclusion from the final cut surfaced during Shakman's interview with Variety ahead of the film's late July premiere. According to Shakman, sequences featuring Malkovich's villain were among numerous scenes ultimately trimmed during editing.

"A Tough Cut to Make"

"While crafting this '60s retro-futuristic world, we had to balance introducing multiple villains, establishing our core four characters both individually and as a team, and exploring the dynamic of adding a child character," Shakman explained. "Certain elements inevitably got streamlined for the final version."

Though Malkovich's participation as Red Ghost remained somewhat mysterious, his casting wasn't explicitly secret. Fans glimpsed the actor sporting distinctive long white hair and beard in February's teaser trailer, fueling speculation about his role's significance. However, his absence from subsequent marketing materials prompted rumors about potential cuts, now confirmed accurate.

A Director's Personal Disappointment

"Omitting John from the final cut was heartbreaking," Shakman admitted. "He's both a personal inspiration and one of my favorite people—a true Renaissance artist who bridges theater, film, and television with unparalleled skill."

The director praised Malkovich's artistic legacy: "As co-founder of Steppenwolf Theater Company and groundbreaking performer across mediums, working with him was an honor. He brought his trademark brilliance to every moment."

The Lost Battle Sequence

Shakman revealed Malkovich's scenes would have appeared during a flashback sequence detailing the Fantastic Four's early adventures. The excised material featured Red Ghost and his Super-Apes battling Marvel's First Family. While Shakman confirmed Malkovich delivered exceptional work, he acknowledged these scenes may never see official release.

Fantastic Four's Ensemble Cast

The July 25, 2025 release stars Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/The Thing). Supporting cast includes Julia Garner, Ralph Ineson, Sarah Niles, Natasha Lyonne, and Paul Walter Hauser.
