The decision to bring Resident Evil 9: Requiem back to Raccoon City stemmed from genuine wonder rather than pre-planned storytelling, revealed director Koshi Nakanishi.

"That lingering curiosity - what became of survivors and locations afterward? It's like leaving rice cooker untouched for days and wondering what you'd find," Nakanishi explained to 4Gamer.

Destroyed entrance of Raccoon Police Department

As the original setting that sparked franchise lore, Raccoon City's viral outbreak transformed urban areas into contaminated ruins with scant survivors.

Among them was Alyssa Ashcroft (Resident Evil Outbreak protagonist and mother to RE9's lead Grace). Her eventual death motivates Grace's dangerous pilgrimage to Raccoon City, with emotional closure serving as the narrative core behind RE9's "Requiem" subtitle.

Strategic Horror Pacing Decisions

Nakanishi analyzed previous franchise entries to refine RE9's horror-combat equilibrium, emphasizing crucial pacing considerations.

Speaking with GamesRadar, he stressed alternating intensity with respite prevents player fatigue. Drawing inspiration from RE7 and RE2, he advocates for cathartic breathing room between terrifying sequences.

"The pacing must fluctuate - terrifying highs followed by exploratory lows or thrilling combat," Nakanishi clarified. "This oscillation creates balanced experiences where horror maintains impact through measured delivery."

Innovative Gameplay Systems Planned

Beyond pacing refinements, Nakanishi teased innovative systemic evolution awaiting players in RE9.

"We're amplifying tension-release extremes beyond previous entries," he teased. "Expect unprecedented swings between horror's contrasting aspects - details will become clearer."

Resident Evil Requiem launches February 27, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay informed with our comprehensive coverage below!
