Excitement is building for the highly anticipated release of *Grand Theft Auto 6* (GTA 6), slated for a fall 2025 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. However, fans on PC will have to wait longer, a move that feels somewhat outdated in today's gaming landscape. Given the crucial role of PCs in the success of multiplatform games, the decision to exclude PC at launch raises questions about whether it's a missed opportunity or a strategic mistake.
In a recent interview with IGN, Take-Two Interactive's CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed these concerns. While discussing the simultaneous launch of *Civilization 7* across multiple platforms, Zelnick hinted at the eventual arrival of GTA 6 on PC. He noted, "Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then moved to other platforms," suggesting a familiar pattern for Rockstar's releases.
Rockstar's history with PC releases has been marked by delays and a complex relationship with the modding community. Despite these challenges, fans hoped GTA 6 might signal a change in approach. However, it appears PC gamers may need to wait until at least 2026 to experience the game, given the fall 2025 console release window.
The significance of the PC platform was underscored by Zelnick, who revealed that PC versions can account for up to 40% of a game's sales, sometimes even more. This is particularly relevant as sales of the current generation consoles, PS5 and Xbox Series X and S, have declined. With no immediate next-gen announcements from Sony or Microsoft, the industry's reliance on PCs is likely to grow.
"We have seen PC become a much more and more important part of what used to be a console business, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that trend continue," Zelnick commented, signaling the increasing importance of the PC market. He also anticipates a new console generation, but until then, PC's role will continue to expand.
Despite the delayed PC release, Zelnick believes that GTA 6's launch will significantly boost console sales. He predicts that the game, expected to be the biggest entertainment launch ever, will drive fans to purchase current-gen consoles to experience it. "When you have a big title in the market... historically that has sold consoles," he explained, projecting a meaningful uptick in console sales in 2025 due to the release schedule.
Speculation about the PlayStation 5 Pro potentially serving as the optimal platform for GTA 6 has also surfaced. However, tech experts doubt the PS5 Pro will be able to run the game at 4K60, tempering expectations for those hoping for the ultimate gaming experience.
