The creator of Balatro has explained his viral poker game's deliberate avoidance of microtransactions and ads by humorously stating these monetization methods make him "want to put my computer in the dishwasher and set it to pots and pans."
"The honest reason I don't include microtransactions/season passes/ads/excessive DLCs in Balatro isn't just ethical opposition - when I encounter these in other games, it makes me want to put my computer in the dishwasher and set it to pots and pans," Localthunk posted on Bluesky.
"I understand why developers implement these systems, but you're fundamentally compromising user experience when players' first impression gets buried under monetization elements that aren't part of the actual game."
When questioned if his comments specifically targeted free-to-play card game Marvel Snap, Localthunk clarified: "This isn't about them specifically, but I'm not excusing them either. There's about a 95% chance that in free-to-play games, the main menu UI becomes more convoluted than the actual gameplay interface."
Microtransactions remain a contentious issue in gaming, with accusations that some developers employ predatory monetization strategies. Regulatory bodies like Norway's consumer council have condemned loot boxes as exploitative, leading to bans in countries like Belgium and the Netherlands. Some U.S. legislators have even pushed for prohibiting aggressive in-app purchases following FTC investigations.
The debate reignited recently when Activision faced criticism for briefly inserting ads into Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone's loadout screens. The company later removed them, stating this was an accidental "feature test."
Localthunk has also publicly opposed AI-generated art after a subreddit moderator falsely claimed neither he nor publisher Playstack objected to AI art. The developer stated: "Neither Playstack nor I endorse AI 'art'. I don't use it in my game, and I believe it actively harms working artists. This moderator's actions didn't reflect our position, and we've removed them from the moderation team."
Balatro is an unconventional deck-building game where players create illegal poker hands, collect powerful jokers, and execute thrilling combos. IGN's review scored it 9/10, praising it as "a poker roguelike of endlessly satisfying proportions that can easily consume entire weekends."
