Gearbox, the developer of Borderlands 4, has identified enhancing the game’s PC performance as its highest priority. A patch is scheduled for release today, September 18.

In a social media update, the studio acknowledged player feedback regarding Borderlands 4 across PC and consoles and confirmed that updates are on the way to address these concerns.

Additionally, Gearbox mentioned that a field of view (FOV) slider for consoles is currently undergoing testing.

Gearbox is under significant scrutiny as it responds to online criticism about Borderlands 4's performance, despite the game's strong player count on Steam. The studio released a PC update over the weekend—without detailed patch notes—that appeared to resolve few issues, so expectations are high that this new patch will deliver tangible improvements.

Borderlands 4 continues to receive mixed reviews on Steam, with performance issues being the primary complaint. The technical analysts at Digital Foundry reported that their initial evaluation of Borderlands 4 on PC revealed notable stuttering problems. They recommend avoiding the ‘Badass’ graphics setting, pointing to potential issues with this Unreal Engine 5 release.

Meanwhile, IGN has highlighted that console players are experiencing worsening performance over extended play sessions, especially on the more powerful PS5 Pro. Some users suspect a memory leak is to blame. Gearbox head Randy Pitchford has suggested restarting the game as a temporary solution.

Gearbox has published a Borderlands 4 Nvidia Optimization guide on Steam, offering tips on how to adjust graphics settings for improved performance and frame rates on PC using the Nvidia app. However, player reports on its effectiveness vary.

The developer also offered advice to PC gamers, which seems aimed at discouraging quick judgments after adjusting settings: “Please note that changing any graphics setting requires shaders to recompile. We recommend playing for at least 15 minutes to assess how the adjustments impact your PC’s performance.”

Pitchford has been in the spotlight this week for his active engagement with player complaints on social media. Following Borderlands 4’s massive Steam launch, the outspoken developer made unclear statements regarding the absence of a console FOV slider, asserted that server overload from player numbers alone would not have caused disruptions, challenged critics to “code your own engine and show us how it’s done, please,” and described Borderlands 4 as “a premium game made for premium gamers.” He has even advised dissatisfied players to request a Steam refund.
